FAQ
The main advantage of the Mega Slam XL is its maximum rigidity and pro-level performance, making it the most stable and durable basketball system in the Mega Slam lineup.
It features an industry-leading 12” x 8” main pole combined with a 5-foot overhang, which not only minimizes vibration and backboard movement during aggressive play, but also provides flexibility to offset the post from the playnig surface creating increased space between the pole and the backboard for improved player safety.
The Mega Slam XL also comes standard with our 180° Pro Rim. To read more about the differences between these rim types click here.
The extra overhang on the Mega Slam XL creates more usable space under the basket, which directly improves both safety and playability.
Compared to more compact systems in the Mega Slam lineup, the XL extends the backboard further away from the pole, allowing the post to be offset from the playing surface giving players more room to play without worrying about contact with the pole. This is especially noticeable on layups, reverse finishes, and during more aggressive play.
It also brings the experience closer to what you’d find on a regulation court, where there’s clear space behind the backboard. The result is a true “gym-quality” playing experience, especially for aggressive play like dunking, where stability and responsiveness are critical.
In simple terms, the three differences are the rim type, overhang, and pole size. Both systems have an identical regulation size 72" backboard.
The Mega Slam XL has a 5' overhang with a massive 12"x8" pole, and the Mega Slam 72 has 4' overhang with an 8"x6" pole. The advantage with the larger 5' overhang on the Mega Slam XL is the ability to offset the pole outside of the baseline and still enjoy a regulation overhang distance on the paying surface. This is a desired feature found on dedicated courts.
The Mega Slam XL also comes with our 180° Pro Rim while the Mega Slam 72 has the collegiate flex rim. However, for an additional charge you can upgrade to the 180° Pro Rim during the check out within the shopping cart.

Both the Mega Slam 72 and Mega Slam XL feature a regulation 72" tempered glass backboard, so the core playing experience is very similar. The key differences come down to pole size, rim type, and overhang.
The Mega Slam XL is built as the most heavy-duty system in the lineup. It uses a significantly larger 12" x 8" main pole with a 5’ overhang, additional structural reinforcements, and more overall weight to create maximum rigidity with virtually no movement during aggressive play.
The Mega Slam 72 is also a popular choice for most homeowners because it delivers true regulation performance with a more practical footprint. It features an 8" x 6" main pole and a 4-foot overhang, providing excellent stability and a professional feel while fitting comfortably in most residential driveways and backyard courts.
When would you choose the XL instead?
If you want the absolute most rigid system available, have a larger court space and want the 5’ overhang for player safety, or plan for extremely heavy, high-frequency dunking, the XL is designed for that next level of intensity. The 5’ overhang with more flexibility to offset the post away from the playing surface.
The Mega Slam XL also comes with our 180° Pro Rim while the Mega Slam 72 has the collegiate flex rim. However, for an additional charge you can upgrade to the 180° Pro Rim during the check out within the shopping cart.

The Mega Slam XL adjusts from 10 feet down to approximately 5.5 feet.
Similar to other Mega Slam models, this extended range makes the XL very versatile:
• Regulation 10-foot height for serious, competitive play
• But lowers far enough to accommodate younger players and skill development
This means the XL isn’t just a top-tier performance system, it’s also one that can grow with players over time, from first baskets all the way to full-speed, above-the-rim play.
The Mega Slam XL is designed to be straightforward to install, especially when compared to other in-ground systems, but like all premium, heavy-duty hoops, it does require some planning and effort.
Installation is done in two main stages:
1. Setting the anchor in concrete
2. Assembling and mounting the system once cured
Mega Slam provides step-by-step guidance, and the process is very manageable for anyone with basic DIY or construction experience. Many customers choose to install it themselves, while others opt for a local contractor for convenience.
Within the Mega Slam lineup, the hoop installs similarly to the other adjustable height models, with one key feature: the adjustable height mechanism allows you to lower the system during assembly, making it easier to attach the backboard compared to fixed-height designs.
In short, it’s not “plug-and-play”—but for a system of this size and quality, the Mega Slam XL is about as installer-friendly as it gets, with flexibility to go DIY or professional depending on your preference.
